It
was indeed a historical series for the Indian equity mark
et as we saw index clocking fresh record highs in the initial
week of December series. Nifty was all set to reach yet another milestone of 19000; but unfortunately, due to
reappearing concerns of COVID, fear of recession and rising interest, market correct
ed from higher levels to test the
17800 mark. The concluding week turned out to be a saviour as market rebounded to see off the final series of calendar
year 2022 around 18200.
During the series, we could hardly trace any meaningful shorts in both the key
indices. Rollover in Nifty and BankNifty
stood at 79% and 84% respectively, which is below in case of banking index and at par for Nifty. We have also seen open
interest reduction series on series for both the indices, which clearly suggests we are beginn
ing new series with lower
open interest base. Stronger hands curbed liquidity from the Indian equity market, as they sold to the tune of Rs. 14,231
in the month of December. Meanwhile, they also lightened up decent shorts and rolled over few bearish bets i
n index
futures segment. The Long Short Ratio’ is now at 57%, suggesting they still hold majority of longs in system. For now,
18200 followed by 18300 on the call strikes and 17500 followed by 18000
put strikes are attracting traders’ attention.
Considering the above data points, we believe Nifty 17800-
18300 is the immediate trading range and any convincing
move beyond this should dictate the short to medium term trend.
